In 2000 he was the Buzzards unanimous selection as Rookie of the Year Award. (He was the only new player on the roster). But he followed that up by being voted the Team MVP in 2000-01 & a Heritage League All-Star in 2001-02.   He is a solid defensive player, and openly credits his success to his mentor, retired captain Rod Pertson. "It's a privilige to have been on the ice with him and seen him work." "He makes everyone so much better out there." "I just felt so safe when he was out there."   Schmitty enjoys playing golf with his fellow teammates Dan Pilling & Remo Williams, but he always looks forward to his next tee time with the master, Jeff Helper.   "Schmitty" always looked forward to the annual points battle with his defense partner in crime, Ryan Williams.   He is affectionately known as "The Dink"   Schmitty retired in 2013 as the most decorated defenseman in Buzz history, winning 9 Championships.
